FPC Solar Water Heater absorb the solar radiation by Flat Plate Collectors which consist of an insulated outer metallic box covered on the top with glass sheet. Inside there are blackened metallic absorber (selectively coated) sheets with built in channels or riser tubes to carry water. The sides and bottom of the collector are usually insulated to minimize the heat loss. Sunlight passes through the glazing and strikes the absorber plate, which is made of copper plate, which heats up, changing solar energy into heat energy ensuring high efficiency and durability. The heat is transferred to liquid passing through pipes attached to the absorber plate.

For most residential and small commercial hot water applications, the solar flat plate collector tends to be more cost effective due to their simple design, low cost, and relatively easier installation compared to other forms of hot water heating systems. What is the maximum temperature of hot water the heat pump can provide?

It is Always better to buy a solar water heater of the right capacity in consultation with an expert or Stellar Channel Partner or Design Engineer. Usage of Hot Water vary on many factors.For on an average indianhousehold , System Capacity should be 40-50 Liters per member of a Family and 50-75 litres for Kitchen per day . So for a family of 4-5 Persons, System Capacity suggested is 300 LPD.

What are the site requirements for installation of a solar water heating system?
  • The basic requirement for functioning of a solar system is availability of unobstructed sunlight for the whole day.
  • Typically, domestic solar water heating systems are installed on the roof of the house.
  • The collectors of the system have to face the sun and hence should be oriented due south for maximum interception of sunlight. Thus there should be no obstruction to sunlight in the south, west and east directions in that order of preference (an arc of about 120 °, 60° both sides of the southern direction should ideally be shadow free).
  • As a thumb rule, the requirement of shadow free area is around 3 sq. m for each 1 x 2 m collector used.
  • It is best if the area is flat, away from rain water drains and as far as possible, close to the bathrooms where hot water is to be supplied.
  • Cold water should be available at the height of around 2.5 m from the base of the system.
What is a flat plate collector?
  • It consists of an absorber plate which is coated on its sun facing surface with an absorbent coating, also called selective coating.
  • The absorber consists of a grid of metallic tubes and sheets. Water flows through the tubes. Sheet absorbs the solar radiation falling on it and transfers it to water.
  • The absorber plate is placed in a top open box to protect it from weather. The space between back and sides of the absorber and the box is filled with insulation to reduce heat losses. The front of the box is covered with a high transmittance glass plate.
  • Flat plate collectors are specified on the basis of their area and are of commonly 1x2 m size.
What is an ETC Collector ?
  • ETC Stands for Evacuated tube Collector .
  • ETC Collectors are the most efficient solar Thermal Collectors used for heating water .
  • ETC Collectors are made of two borosilicate glass tube with inside coating of Copper and Alloy and outside black color coating . The Second glass tube is used to create vacuum insulation so that heat is trapped inside the inner tube and there is no heat loss to environment .
  • ETC Tubes comes in 2 Popular sizes – 58 MM Dia and 1800 MM Length and 58 MM Dia and 2100 MM Length .Each Tube is Capable of Heating 10 – 15 Liters of Water in one Day .
What would happen on cloudy days?
  • The heating of water by the solar water heater will obviously be affected.
  • If it is so cloudy that energy received from the sun is almost zero, the output of solar collectors also will be nil.
  • On partially cloudy days some output can be expected.
  • But, the system can be designed with a suitable electrical back up heater to take care of hot water demand on cloudy days.
How much Electricity and Money can be saved?

Depending on the Usage and geography Electricity saved varies . A standard 100 LPD Solar Water Heater System can save 2-3 Units of Electricity Each Day . Normally Solar Water Heaters can recover its Cost within 3 Years .

What are the Maintenance Requirements?
  • Domestic solar water heating system does not require significant maintenance. Occasional leakages in the plumbing could be easily repaired by common plumbers.
  • In case quality of water is hard, scale deposition in the collectors may result over the years. This may require descaling with acids for which it is best to contact the suppliers.
  • Broken glass may also have to be replaced by the suppliers.
  • If outside exposed surfaces are painted, the paint may have to be redone every 2-3 years to prevent corrosion of the surfaces.
